Volunteer With Us
Breakthrough recognizes the critical role that volunteers and partnerships play in effecting change. Breakthrough knows that long-term success depends on the strength of partnerships. We work with our partners to connect, harness, and leverage the resources needed to successfully launch and sustain impactful programs.
Breakthrough has developed a wide range of opportunities to meaningfully engage volunteers in our work. These range from one day events (such as Career Day, when students work alongside a professional) to ongoing assignments (such as Super Saturday, when high school students are given extra support during the college-going process). See below for descriptions of opportunities for you or your organization to be involved with Breakthrough Birmingham!
NOTE: The dates below are EXPECTED dates for Summer 2020 and are subject to change given the ongoing COVID-19/coronavirus threat.
Visitors’ Day 2020
June 23 and June 25
Join us for Visitors’ Day this summer! We will lead visitors through our program by giving an overview of what we do daily during the summer and reviewing our programming during the school year. Visitors will have the opportunity to hear about our results as a program and to see the work of our teachers and students in action. Our Executive Director, Mariohn Michel, will lead visitors through the school where they can stop by classrooms to see the Breakthrough Instructional Model of small group, active engagement instruction.
Visitors will also get to meet some of our teaching fellows to talk about their experiences over the summer and to learn the impact that Breakthrough has had on them thus far. In addition, visitors will get the chance to talk to our Instructional Coaches, who are educators in Birmingham, to hear more about the long term effect of Breakthrough’s instructional practices implemented in their school year classrooms. Visitor’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Breakthrough by seeing the program in action and getting to meet some of our bright scholars, teachers, and instructional coaches, all of whom are influencing the climate of education in Birmingham.
Career Day 2020
June 26, 2020
Career Day is your chance to make a difference in the lives of Breakthrough Birmingham students. By giving them first-hand experience at your place of business, you will inspire them to become professionals like you. We are looking for a range of professionals to host our students – engineers, creatives, doctors, accountants, lawyers, even CEOs. By serving as a Career Day host, you’ll be helping develop Birmingham’s next generation of leaders.
Breakthrough Birmingham scholars are highly motivated students who aspire to go to college and work in professions like yours. Our students will prepare for this special day for weeks. They will write resumes; research your company and your profession; prepare questions to ask you and your colleagues; and practice a firm handshake, eye contact, and active listening. After Career Day, our students will share their experiences with classmates and learn how to write formal business letters and professional thank-you notes.
If you are interested in hosting groups of 7-10 students (along with 2-3 adult chaperones) for our next Summer Career Day, please contact us!
