At Breakthrough Birmingham, we’re on a mission to close the opportunity gap for underrepresented students through unique educational experiences. Our teaching fellow program is vital to this mission, nurturing the next generation of educators and leaders. One such teaching fellow is Kamora Porter, whose inspiring journey embodies the heart of Breakthrough Birmingham.
Meet Kamora Porter: A Rising Teaching Fellow for Breakthrough Birmingham
Meet Kamora Porter—a Birmingham native, Ramsay High School alum, and current Emory University student. She’s majoring in political science and African studies and dreams of making a difference through non-profit and advocacy work. Kamora’s journey with Breakthrough Birmingham started with a spark of passion and a desire to give back to her community.
Kamora’s Journey: From Advocacy to Education Equity
Kamora’s story is rooted in her experiences with NewGen Peacebuilders during high school, where she worked on raising awareness for homelessness. This early exposure to advocacy fueled her passion for making a change. Although she never saw herself in a classroom, Kamora always wanted to impact education policy and provide resources she felt were lacking during her school years.
Joining Breakthrough Birmingham as a teaching fellow was a leap into the unknown for Kamora, but she embraced it wholeheartedly. The two-week orientation stood out to her, especially the mantra of “progress over perfection.” It was a reminder that growth is a journey, and every step forward counts. By the end of the orientation, Kamora and her fellow teaching fellows were writing affirmations for each other, building a community of support and encouragement.

Through her fellowship, she has grown personally and professionally, gaining skills that will serve her in any career. Kamora reflects on how the program has built her character and encouraged her to take risks, reinforcing the idea that you don’t need a traditional background in education to make a difference.

Kamora sums up her experience beautifully: “Don’t come into this thinking you have to have a background or be on the path to the classroom. It helps build your character and build you professionally. Be a risk-taker.”
